The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) partnered with enCodePlus in 2023 to finalize and host their Stormwater Management Handbook. The Handbook was undergoing a major update involving a large team of collaborators, and the drafting tools available in enCodePlus’ CloudWriter would prove to be especially useful. Handbook editors are able to provide comments on specific portions of text and use track changes to draft new language that can be viewed in real time in one location without needing to keep track of multiple Word or PDF versions. In addition, Citizen Engagement tools help facilitate ongoing updates by allowing the public to comment on the published Handbook. These comments may be reviewed by document editors and incorporated as needed.
Additional features make the Handbook more useful and accessible to users. A Site Navigator presents the Handbook information in a custom-branded easy to use landing page that links directly to featured topics, information on how to use and comment on the Handbook, and lists of tables and figures. Main menu links are provided to various DEQ resources, such as a list of BMPs, general stormwater information, and the Virginia Runoff Reduction Method. Auto-updating hyperlinked cross-references, pop-up definitions, and links to other government resources such as downloadable CAD files are also incorporated into the Handbook text.
Virginia DEQ staff and enCodePlus continue to collaborate on future updates to the Stormwater Management Handbook and Site Navigator.
