Travis County, home to Texas’ capital city of Austin, knows well the impact of technology on government processes. Staff there are constantly in touch not only with their local legislature but that of Texas as a whole. They understand how keeping digital records helps them streamline internal processes, maintain an eco-friendly storage system, and allow the public easier access to their local laws. They also know the value of keeping things simple. Their enCodePlus portal contains just the County Code, plus a few links to outside resources such as the county’s homepage and permitting website.
What most attracted county staff to enCodePlus was its archiving feature. This enables them to provide a full historic record of the County Code online in an easy-to-navigate format that can also be exported to PDF and printed in part or in full as needed. When converting their County Code to enCodePlus in late 2019, staff was provided with the earliest full version of the code from 1995 and all amendments to it from that point on to build out the historic record. Once the code reached its current version in early 2020, County staff took on the role of codifier, choosing to train with the enCodePlus codification tools in order to self-publish amendments. Now, full versions of the code can be viewed for every ordinance from March 1995 to present day.
